10 Life Lessons I Learned from My Cat

 MEOW!

Glad you’re here, even Cat Approves.

This is a redemption story. From negligent teen to enlightened elder, cat owner Erich William March shares his cat-inspired philosophies, and how our feline mentors can make an impact on our daily lives with these 10 life lessons.

About the Book

This book follows one man’s journey from reluctant pet owner to self-proclaimed “cat man.” Along the way, he discovers that the lessons we need most often come from the unlikeliest places—a gentle purr, a quiet stare, a moment of stillness. Each lesson reveals how a cat’s simple nature can inspire us to live with more intention, empathy, and grace.

I wasn’t always a “cat man.” In fact, for most of my life, I tried hard not to be one. Like many, I grew up in a world that celebrated dogs as loyal companions and saw cats as secondary. But fate, and a few furry teachers, had other plans.

My first cat, Kitty Cat, came into my life when I was 12. I rescued him as a tiny, helpless kitten, but as a distracted teenager, I failed to care for him the way he deserved. When he finally left, I was left with regret and a hard lesson about responsibility and love.

More than fifty years later, life came full circle. At 65, I discovered another abandoned kitten—this time under a bush near my home. I called him simply, Cat. I almost took him to a shelter, but something told me to keep him. That decision changed everything.

Through Cat, I rediscovered compassion, patience, and presence—and learned ten powerful life lessons that continue to shape how I see the world. This book is my reflection on those lessons, and my hope is that they inspire you to see life, and yourself, a little differently too.
